Summer Festivals for Families in Ibiza

Do your kids love boats?  Have you ever seen giant outdoor pan of paella big enough to feed an entire neighborhood?  You might, if your family is lucky enough to vacation in Ibiza this July. The Nanny Line has all the information about two festivals taking place in July and August on Ibiza this summer, so don’t miss out!

Festival of Virgen Del Carmen, 16 of July.

On land and at sea.

The Virgen del Carmen is considered the patron saint of fishermen and sailors.  This annual celebration in her honor involves the fishermen carrying her effigy through the streets of the port towns of Ibiza town, San Antonio and Formentera.  Very often local bands and musicians accompany her procession, so get ready to dance in the streets! All seafaring locals and the general public make an offering of flowers at the port followed by a prayer for all of the souls of those who died in the sea.  Next, participants move the Virgen del Carmen to a flower-decorated boat.  This boat then leads a parade of all of the town’s vessels around the harbor. You and your little ones will love listening to the live music, blasting ship horns and seeing the boats festooned with flowers, ribbons, and streamers.  Maybe consider renting kayaks or finding a boat captain who would be willing to take you aboard to experience the spectacle first-hand. As the sun sets, the celebration continues with a fireworks show.

Festes de La Terra, 30th of July through the 8th of August, Ibiza Town.

A week-long celebration of Ibiza’s patron saint.

Residents and tourists celebrate Nuestra Senora de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snow) with an entire week of festivities designed to entertain the whole family, young and old.   Events and activities include live music, fireworks, sports competitions, giant paellas, and children’s theater.  The fireworks show happens every year at midnight on August 8 to celebrate the day, in 1235, that Catalans conquered the island. Check out the Ibiza Town’s Tourism Department for the week’s schedule of events.  Your kids will love watching the processions in traditional dress or the live theatrical performances.
